Dr. Jeeson - March 2010

Dear colleagues,

The IAP Drug Formulary was officially released in 2005 and is now being used by over 3500 pediatricians all over the country. The Quarterly Web Update facility has made the contents quite dynamic. Changes could be made in the formulary as and when new developments in pharmacology and pediatric therapeutics became available. After 15 Web Updates, the present contents are very different from that in the original book - IAP Pediatric Drug Formulary 2004. Therefore a new edition of the book - IAP Pediatric Drug Formulary 2009 - is being presented. We propose that along with the Quarterly Web Updates, a new edition of the book will be printed once in 5 years.

This book and the Online Desktop and PDA version of the IAP Drug Formulary has been included in the IAP Action Plan 2009. The much awaited Online PDA version will ensure that the formulary could be downloaded into even the latest versions of the PDA. This was not possible till date as the formulary was compatible with only windows based palm tops that were in the market in 2005.

The IAP Executive Board, at its meeting on 6/1/10 at Hyderabad, decided to transfer the permanent office of its publication - The IAP Drug Formulary - to Cochin. Hence, all communications regarding the IAP Drug Formulary should henceforth be made to the Editor-in-chief at the new office address given on the Purchase page and Contact Us page on the website www.iapdrugformulary.com.

All users are requested to register at the site - iapdrugformulary.com - as soon as they buy the software so that their CD Key (username) would be available in our archives for recall in case the user looses the same. We would also be able to send the user newsletters regarding availability of latest updates if the user's email id is available on the website registration form. Please read through installation and update tips available at the site.

The Formulary contains information, which, to the best of our knowledge, is accurate and up-to-date. But every practitioner must, as we have always insisted, take individual responsibility for taking all precautions when dispensing and administering drugs to children. We are looking forward to comments and criticism.

We hope to continue this service in the same professional manner that comes to be associated with its management to date. All queries regarding the formulary and regarding drug use in pediatrics in general are being answered. Our special thanks to the contributors from the various IAP sub chapters. Our beloved IAP President 2010 - Dr Deepak Ugra has been extremely supportive and proactive. We are sure that the formulary will grow in stature under his able guidance. Our efficient Hon Gen Secretary - Dr Tanmay Amladi - has been encouragement personified. We wish to also thank all the office bearers and members of IAP CMEG for their cooperation and guidance. Working with SIDS, Bangalore has been a pleasure all along and I'm sure all the users will also vouch for their prompt and efficient services. We are thankful to Pixel Studio for printing the book; Wyeth, MSD and Merck Ltd., for providing the Educational Grant for the printing of the IAP Drug Formulary 2009, development of the Online Desktop and PDA version of the IAP Drug Formulary and yearly fee for website maintenance and creating the quarterly Web Updates, respectively.

Wishing all users happy reading

Dr. Jeeson - October 2006

Dear colleagues,

I am extremely happy that this Quarterly Web Publication of the IAP - IAP Drug Formulary - is being widely used by pediatricians all over the country. This is the 2nd Web Update for 2006 and the 3rd in all. It has been a fabulous learning experience and we are happy that most users are happy with the product and that no one had any problem downloading the 2 web updates - the last in Jul 2006. The present update will contain 6 new additions to the drug monograph section and additions to 2 existing monographs.

We hereby take the opportunity to once again inform users that only windows based palm tops would support the Drug formulary software. All users are requested to register at the site - iapdrugformulary.com - as soon as they buy the software so that their CD Key would be available in our archives for recall in case the user looses the same. We would also be able to send the user newsletters regarding availability of latest updates if the user's e mail id is available on the website registration form. Please read through installation and update tips available at the site.

We hope to continue this service in the same professional manner that comes to be associated with its management to date. All queries regarding the formulary and regarding drug use in pediatrics in general are being answered. Our special thanks to the contributors from the various IAP sub chapters. Our beloved IAP President 2006 - Dr Nitin Shah - and the efficient Hon Gen Secretary - Dr Deepak Ugra - have been very supportive and helpful. I wish to also thank all the office bearers and members of IAP CMEG for their cooperation and guidance.

Wishing all users happy reading

With warm personal regards,

Dr. Jeeson - July 2006

Dear colleagues,

I am extremely happy that the IAP Drug Formulary has been accepted as an official publication of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics and is being widely used by pediatricians all over the country. This year we proposed to have quarterly web updates but due to certain issues that needed to be discussed at the June Board regarding these updates, there was a delay in uploading the 1st update for 2006. We will have 2 more web updates this year. It has been a fabulous learning experience and we are happy that most users are happy with the product and that almost everyone had no problem obtaining the 1st web update in December 2005.The present update will contain a new chapter on snake bite and scorpion sting, changes in the endocrinology chapter and additions and updates of around 30 drugs used in pediatrics.

We hope to continue this service in the same professional manner that come to be associated with its management to date. All queries regarding the formulary and regarding drug use in pediatrics in generalare being answered. Our special thanks to the contributors from the various IAP sub chapters. I would like to make a special mention of a non-pediatrician who has made a contribution of his invaluable experience in the field of snake and scorpion envenomation in this web update - Dr Himmat Bawaskar. A big thank you to you sir.

Dr. Jeeson - December 2005

Dear colleagues,

The IAP Drug Formulary has been an unqualified success due to the high standard of inputs from all the contributors. The web update is the final test for the IAP Drug Formulary. If every user is able to download the updates from the website on to their hard disc without a hitch, ours could possibly be the first pediatric drug formulary in the world providing such a facility.

This update has a few unique features. It is for the first time that IAP and NNF have pitched in together for a formulary of this kind. The Neonatology chapter has been completely overhauled with contribution from 2 NNF members and 2 members from the IAP Neonatology Sub Chapter. An excellent chapter on Dermatology has been added in this update. Most contentious issues have been addressed and all comments by users have been considered in detail and changes made wherever appropriate.

However, the request of many, that users be provided the facility to add generic names of their choice to the program, could not be complied with. This was due to a technical problem. Being a master driven product, the updates from the main master would go haywire if users started editing the data, and there would be no single master anymore. Every user would have his own master. Further, the formulary software is a front end to display the data entered in various combinations using complex queries and the data has necessarily to be entered using a common data entry package.

The Formulary contains information, which, to the best of our knowledge, is accurate and up-to-date. But every practitioner must, as we have always insisted, take individual responsibility for taking all precautions when dispensing and administering drugs to children. We are looking forward to comments and criticism regarding the update.

I place on record, my sincere thanks to IAP President 2005, Dr Raju C Shah and IAP Hon Gen Secretary Dr Bharat Agarwal for their support and all the IAP Sub Chapters and the contributors for their expert inputs. SIDS-SolutionZ and Pixel Studio have continued their good work.

I hope the meaningful updates can continue to be made available every year so that this ongoing publication of IAP meets international standards and continues to be sought after by all those caring for children and adolescents.

Dr. Jeeson - December 2004

Dear colleagues,

When I conceived the IAP Pediatric Drug Formulary CDRom and book Project for the IAP Computer and Medical Electronics Group and presented it to Dr M K C Nair the incoming National President of the IAP in 2003, it was just a distant dream.

I immediately got the support from the IAP CMEG Chairperson Dr Naveen Thacker and the planning began. A sponsor was identified and SIDS, Bangalore was entrusted, after a thorough search, as the software company capable of developing the desktop, palmtop and web versions of the Formulary, simultaneously. The yearly or even half-yearly updates were to be downloadable on to the users hard disc from a third party web host that could be accessed via the IAP parent website - iapindia.org.

The project report was presented at the Executive Board of IAP at the XXXXIst IAP National Conference at Chennai. Perseverance and meticulous pre-conference follow-up ensured that the project was included by Dr. M. K. C. Nair as one of his Presidential Action Plans 2004 during the Executive Board meeting. This gave the project the much-needed boost.

The sub-specialty chapters of the IAP were requested to submit recommendations for treatment of pediatric illnesses pertaining the their respective specialty and the response was overwhelming. These 35 contributors have generously spent their valuable time and effort in formulating their respective presentations. Their expertise and rich experience in the field have made the IAP Recommendations, for almost every known pediatric illness, a baseline resource for future updations. Drug monographs and a few brand names for each drug available in India were compiled from various sources. The 8 editors reviewed the huge database, which, after corrections and editing, was made as brief, to-the-point and uniform as possible so as to make it easy to scan. It could therefore be an excellent tabletop reference book for every pediatrician, general practitioner and medical expert dealing with children in India.

SIDS provided a data entry application which was modified, as and when needed, to suit our requirements. Mr. Narayanan of Pixel Studio, Kochi - our publisher - managed the data entry. Corrections and checking the data was a mammoth exercise.

The IAP Pediatric Drug Formulary CDRom and Book contains information which, to our knowledge, is up-to-date. But the practitioner would be responsible for taking all precautions while dispensing and administering medications to children. There may be omissions and errors in this, our first edition and users must pardon us for them. Do feel free to communicate with me regarding these mistakes and omissions. The CDRom and Book are for private circulation only and intends to promote correct and ethical pediatric treatment protocols.

I would like to take this opportunity to place on record my heartfelt thanks to IAP President 2004, Dr MKC Nair, for including this project as one of his Presidential Plans 2004, Hon General Secretary IAP, Dr Bharat Agarwal for his unstinted cooperation, the editors, all the sub specialty chapters and other contributors for their involvement, CMEG Chairperson Dr Naveen Thacker, Secretary Dr C P Bansal, CMEG Executive Committee and each and every CMEG member for the encouragement and unconditional support, SIDS, Mr Narayanan of Pixel Studios and Apex Laboratories Pvt Ltd, our sponsor for making this dream a reality.

Thank you one and all. Hope the CDRom and BOOK will be useful to all its users.
